You have the right to express a preference about the GP you are assigned to - we always consider requests but we are not always able to alter this HOWEVER, you also have the right to request to see a different GP.

I graduated from Dundee University in 1991 and joined Brimington Surgery as a partner in 1998. My special interests are in Women's Health and Family Planning. I value our approach to Personal Care here at Brimington Surgery and the continuity that we endeavour to offer. Days in surgery: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

After a career in Engineering, I retrained in medicine at Nottingham University, qualifying in 2009. The majority of my subsequent training was in Chesterfield, including periods at The Brimington Surgery, and I qualified as a General Practitioner in Chesterfield in 2014. I started as a salaried GP here at The Brimington Surgery at that point, and joined the partnership in 2017. Days in surgery: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

I started my foundation training in Shrewsbury and the Black Country. I undertook Core medical training in Birmingham Heartlands hospital for 2 years before changing to General Practice. I started my GP training in Wolverhampton completing this in Stockport in 2016. I have worked as a Salaried GP in Chesterfield since this time and joined Brimington in 2022. DR ESTHER JAMES

I studied at Nottingham University and qualified in 2012. I then completed my foundation training in Nottingham and Chesterfield, and joined the Chesterfield GP training programme in 2014. After qualifying as a GP in 2017, I took a few months out of clinical practice to travel around India and South-East Asia, before return to General Practice. Over the past 5 years I have worked in a variety of settings, including a long term salaried post, for an out of hours provider, and also as locum GP. I started working at Brimington Surgery in 2023. Days in surgery: Monday/Tuesday mornings and Friday all day.

I graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2018 and completed my foundation hospital posts in Chesterfield and Derby. I undertook further training at hospitals and GP practices in Sheffield, qualifying as a GP in 2024. I joined the practice shortly after as cover for maternity leave. Days in surgery: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Nurses

Practice nurses are qualified and registered nurses. They can help with health issues such as family planning, healthy living advice, blood pressure checks and dressings. The practice nurses run clinics for long-term health conditions such as asthma or diabetes, minor ailment clinics and carry out cervical smears.

Nurse Practitioner & Lead Nurse

BScN NMC – O1I2430E I graduated from Manchester University in 2004. From there I went on to work specialising in gynaecology and breast surgery care. I then developed my role to become a clinical practitioner specialising in Gynaecological cancer care & Early pregnancy assessment. After 10 years working in the hospital I decided for a change in career and felt passionate working primary care, to develop my skills in health promotion, disease prevention & managing chronic disease in the community. Since joining Brimington surgery I have the pleasure of working with a great team and am proud of the continuity of care we give to patients. I have developed my knowledge career by completing several university courses including – Diabetes management, Non-Medical prescribing, HRT & menopause training, Minor illness management.

JOANNE LUXTON

Practice Nurse PgDip (Adult) RGN NMC:16L0151E After achieving a BSc and MSc in Psychology, I worked within the field of substance misuse and mental health before deciding to retrain as a nurse. I completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Adult Nursing from the University of Sheffield in January 2017. I joined Brimington Surgery in April 2024, having had 7 years experience within primary care. I completed the COPD diploma from the University of Hertfordshire in 2023, and am studying for the diabetes diploma currently. It’s an honour to work with such a skilled team of clinicians at Brimington Surgery. Working days: Tuesdays and Saturdays.

SARAH BILLINGSLEY

Senior Practice Nurse BMedSci (Hons), RGN, NMC 96I3125E I graduated from The University of Sheffield in 1999. Initially I worked on a busy surgical ward and then within an intensive care unit, before becoming a General Practice Nurse in 2005. Having worked previously at three other practices, I am excited to join the team at The Brimington Surgery in January 2025. I have lots of interests including chronic disease management and health promotion. I feel that I have a lot to offer with all my experience, skills, and knowledge. Providing the best possible patient care is my main priority. Days in surgery: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

LAURA WAGSTAFFE

BScN NMC 16B2804E- I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University and graduated in 2016. I became a respiratory nurse at Chesterfield Royal, attaining the title of Senior Staff Nurse. I remained in this post throughout the harrowing years of the pandemic. Post COVID, I became a staff nurse in the Women’s Health Unit within the hospital, a refreshing challenge gaining knowledge and experience in a different field of nursing. I then became a Respiratory Nurse Specialist and completed University modules on both COPD and Asthma. I am delighted to say that I will now be joining the Brimington Surgery and am very much looking forward to this new life challenge.

Community Matron

The Community Matron is a highly experienced and qualified Nurse . Much of her work takes place in the community supporting our housebound patients.

Healthcare Assistants

Healthcare assistants support practice nurses with their daily work and carry out tasks such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), blood pressure measurement and new patient checks. They may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one. Mandy, Gemma and Kim are our HCAs. Heena who is a Trainee Nurse Associate works alongside them.

Social Prescribing Link Worker

The social prescribers' role is to support and enable patients who might not be able to independently access the help and support they need for their health and well-being from community and voluntary services. Our Social Prescribing Link Worker is Karin

Practice Management

The Practice Manager is involved in managing all of the business aspects of the practice such as making sure that the right systems are in place to provide a high quality of patient care, human resources, finance, patient safety, premises and equipment and information technology. The Practice Manager supports the GPs and other medical professionals with delivering patient services and also helps to develop extended services to enhance patient care.

Patient Support Team

Our Patient Support Team is here to help you. If you have a query that cannot be solved they will endeavour to find someone that can help. In some circumstances this team are required to ask for as much information as possible - for example when a home visit is requested. This is in order for your doctor to assess the situation and deal with it correctly. Confidentiality is a priority at the surgery and any information given will be dealt with appropriately. We are unable to give out any information to family members or friends unless written consent from the patient concerned has been given to the practice. Please understand that this is a stipulation of the Data Protection Act and is for the protection of our patients. The team consists of Juliet (Team Leader), Alice (Deputy Team Leader), Faye, Natalie, Sarah B, Sarah C & Sonia.

Patient Coordinator Team/GP Assistants

Debbie, Sammy and Nicola form our Patient Co-ordinators Team. They support the GP oncall every day and manage the call and recall systems

Pharmacists

We have a team of clinical pharmacist and pharmacy technicians integrated into the practice to enhance the safe, effective and accessible use of medicines. I'm the Lead Clinical Pharmacist for Chesterfield and Dronfield Primary Care Network and I have an interest in diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease. I have a diabetes clinic at Brimington Surgery every Friday.
