What is the process for travel vaccinations?

First - access a reputable website and check what vaccines are recommended, or contact a private travel clinic.

THEN, if you require any of the NHS vaccinations, please contact us to book in with a nurse.  Please inform the Patient Support Team member that it is for NHS provided travel vaccinations and where you are going.

Please note that if your holiday is in the next SIX weeks we will be unable to undertake your NHS vaccinations at the surgery.

If you need any of the vaccinations NOT available on the NHS, your trip is in the next six weeks, you need a combination of vaccinations or require more advice then please contact a private travel clinic.

Can your UK GP treat you while you are abroad?

NHS GPs are not allowed to provide consultations, issue prescriptions, or give medical advice if you arephysically outside the UK.

This includes written, telephone, or digital requests for advice or repeat prescriptions.

NHS guidance states that your GP cannot consult with you if you are not physically present in the UK, even via phone or online.

If you are abroad for less than 3 months
Your GP may be able to provide enough medication for existing conditions to cover your trip.  Ongoing care and new prescriptions can not be provided while you are overseas. If you are away for more than 3 months, you should register with a local doctor in your destination country.

If you become unwell while abroad:
You should seek local medical help or contact the local British Embassy for assistance. If you receive treatment abroad, keep any documentation and bring it back to your GP in the UK for your records.

WHY?
The key reason for the restriction is that GPs are not indemnified (insured) to provide medical advice or treatment to patients who are outside the UK.  There are also clinical safety and information security reasons.
